 | The recent crisis in Congress about raising the federal debt ceiling is a good example of how far away full economic recovery still is. Both parties have vastly differing views on the best way ahead and with neither side willing to give in, if a last minute deal had | not been struck, the government would have defaulted on its payments. There would have been economic chaos, but would anyone have been punished? Would anyone have had to pay the same kind of price that you do when you can't pay your bills? The answer is no. But then again, they are not elected to office to be punished when things go wrong.
The problem is that our representatives have been put into office to decide on policy and policy is something that bears fruit down the road, not today. So while everyone argues about the best way to economic recovery, the results are not something that we will see soon. And while the signs are hopeful, to sit back and expect full time employment and job security to fall into our laps tomorrow is foolish. What needs to be done is to seize whatever opportunities the present offers and hold on to them.
In a stagnant job market, temporary staffing is a great way for those who have lost their source of income to keep their cash flow going. | Should You Be The Go To Guy? | Everyone wants to be popular. This is as true in the workplace as anywhere else. And one way of becoming popular and well liked in the office is to be the "Go To Guy" - the guy whom anyone can come to with a problem. Helping out co-workers who are facing difficulties in their work is a good thing to do. You will be well liked and respected for your knowledge and problem solving abilities. But overdoing it can backfire on you. There is a difference between being helpful and becoming a sucker who will allow himself to be used by others to do their work for them.
In the workplace you need to be a team player and work with and help others. But at the same time, your primary loyalty must be to yourself and the work you are entrusted to do. If your own work suffers because you are busy helping others, you are letting yourself and your employer down. You are being paid to produce results and if you can't do that, you have not earned your salary. When you have problems you ask for help but you are careful about it. You don't want to be thought to be weak and incapable of doing the job given to you without help. You don't want to be a pain to others and have them laugh at you. Why then should you treat those who come to you for help differently than the way you expect to be treated?
So where and how do you draw the line between being the "Go To Guy" and the patsy whom others make use of? First of all be clear about your constraints. When you are busy and helping others will affect your work say so and ask them to come back later at a more convenient time. When they do come back, give them all the help you can – they are adjusting to your time constraints. Focus on areas where you can help and do not become a sounding board for those who are looking for a shoulder to cry on. Be firm and polite and say that while you appreciate the problem, you can't really help them and that rather than wasting everyone's time, it would be better if they got help elsewhere.
Help others where and when you can, but get too involved in it and your work will suffer and you will be the one needing help. | |
