 | America's credit rating has been downgraded. You read it in the newspapers and saw the news on TV. It's not a good thing and it will hurt the economy and so it will affect you. Beyond that you don't know what it means. The economy is managed by | politicians and faceless bureaucrats and all you know is that you keep suffering for the mistakes they make. There's no point in wasting your time trying to understand things you have no control over.
But that's wrong. Wrong not because of the usual spiel about every person being able to make a difference, true though that is. It's wrong because by taking the attitude that only things that you come into direct contact with are worth paying attention to and understanding, you are creating the impression that you have no interest in the big picture. It could be because you aren't smart enough to understand or perhaps because you are too lazy to make the effort. Either way, what does that say about you?
What does it say to a prospective employer when you are being interviewed? You may be interviewing for a clerical or production line job that is totally company centric and requires no external knowledge. But employers look not just at the abilities of people they interview but also their potential. They want people who can grow and take on new responsibilities in the company. And that means people who have a broad perspective and at least a basic understanding of important issues, even if they are not related to the job in question at that time.
You don't have to become an economist or a military expert to talk about the wars abroad. But if you take a little trouble to understand the basic issues, you will be seen as a person of intelligence with interests beyond your personal domain. This makes you more interesting, both as a person as well as an employee. And that's a good thing to be.
As a member of Locate Staffing you will be in an environment where you will be mentally stimulated and your desire to grow, at all levels, will be encouraged.
More next month.

| Do You Need A Role Model? | A career is never static – you need to keep growing both in your abilities and as a person to keep moving upwards. But how do you know what you will need at the next stage of your career if you haven't experienced it? Books can help you to prepare, but there is a huge gap between the printed page and real life. Traditionally, what people do is look for a role model whom they can emulate. This will provide them with the real world learning that books cannot offer.
But finding a role model is easier said than done. The role model you choose may have many great qualities worth copying, but there will always be those that you disagree with, make you uncomfortable or just do not suit your work style. Traditional thinking is that since the role model you have chosen is a successful person you need to turn a blind eye to those aspects of the person you are not comfortable with. The role model is a proven success and you are not, so the choice is obvious.
Modern thinking disagrees. With creativity and innovation becoming such an important part of the workplace, the employees who are most valued and who progress the fastest are those who bring something new or fresh to the job. It's no longer thought a good idea to promote someone who is the same as his predecessor. What managements are looking for are people with a combination of skill sets and personal characteristics to both perform efficiently and also make changes and try new things.
So a single role model is no longer the best way to go. What you need is a set of role models. Find different people with their own unique qualities that you can focus on and emulate. One person may be a good team leader. The other may be a problem solver. A third may be an out of the box thinker. Look at the strengths of the person in whose footsteps you wish to follow. Then look for others with the same abilities and decide who will be the better role model for that particular strength and emulate that person. And then find role models with other skills that you think are useful and learn those too. These will be the new things that you will bring to the job when you get the opportunity.
Having many role models is more difficult that having one - there are more people to observe and understand. But the rewards in terms of personal and career growth make it worth the effort. | |
