Preparing for an Interview – Stage I

Landing a job is not just about submitting a resume and about your skill sets. There are other requirements that play a role in landing that all important job that you have been dreaming of. Once you have crossed the hurdle of getting an interview call, now it is time to prepare for that interview, to ensure that you land the job. So what must you do? Did you know that there are three stages to an interview? The BDA Etiquette as we call it. Before, During and After the interview... every stage has its own etiquette. In this newsletter we present a few tips on the Before Interview Etiquette stage.

The Importance of being Well Groomed – how does it matter?

1. When you are dressed appropriately, it is one less worry on your mind and leaves you free to concentrate on what you need to concentrate on during the interview, rather than have this niggling little thought at the back of your mind, because your interviewer is smartly and appropriately dressed for a business day and you are not. You are therefore at an advantage when dressed appropriately. If you happen to turn out overdressed, there again you are uncomfortable and this could affect the rest of your day / your performance at the interview.

2. When you are appropriately dressed it gives the perceiver their first impression of what type of a person you are. It leaves you feeling confident and capable of carrying yourself through the interview, because you have scored your first point.

3. How a person dresses for an interview depends upon the job for which they are interviewing. A general rule is to be one step above the required attire for the company. For example, if most of the men are wearing slacks and a sport coat, wear slacks with a coat and tie. If the women are wearing slacks, wear a suit.

4. Dress appropriately for the industry. When in doubt, go conservative.

5. Personal grooming and cleanliness should be impeccable. Pay particular attention to hands and fingernails.
