 | The latest employment statistics released by the Department of Labor make depressing reading for all those waiting for jobs to once again become available. There were no new jobs created in August 2011. And who knows for sure when things will begin to improve. | There have been so many hopeful signs in the past that all came to nothing. But this doesn't mean that we should resign ourselves to hopelessness and sit back and do nothing.
A look at the recessions and economic downturn that have occurred in this country over the last century shows that while the slide downward has been sudden and rapid the recovery has been slow and stuttering. What history also reveals is that it is those who stayed in the work force, even if on a part time basis, and kept their skills sharp and showed their eagerness to work hard were those who were at the front of the recovery when it did occur. Expect a few more false starts before the real recovery takes root.
In the meantime, you need to stay active, put some money in the bank and keep a large hole from appearing in your resume. Manage this and you will be ready to take advantage of the opportunities that the recovering market will present to you. Talking about staying occupied and earning money where the problem is unemployment may seem like a contradiction. It's easier than you may think.
Joining a reputed temporary staffing agency like Locate Staffing can make a huge difference to both your present circumstances as well as your prospects for the future. We have the leading employers in the Sheboygan region as our clients and those who work with us have great opportunities to take up temporary positions with them. This:

• Makes you a front runner when full time positions open up in a company where you have been a temporary staff member. Managements always prefer to hire people they already know.
If this is not enough, the training opportunities that Locate Staffing offers will enable you to sharpen your existing skills and create new one, thus keeping your value in the job market high.
Becoming part of Locate Staffing will open up a world of opportunities to you. In fact, many people have found temporary staffing to be so rewarding, on so many levels, that they have stopped looking for full time employment and prefer to remain as temporary staffers. More next month.

| Party Time | The holiday season is almost upon us and that means that the office holiday party is being planned. Some people hate these events and think they are nothing but a waste of time where people who can't stand each other pretend to be full of holiday cheer and goodwill. And then there are those who feel that this is a time to show the office the side of them that is never seen, to impress the boss and generally let their hair down. Both groups are wrong. Yes, it is a party and yes it is a social event. But the fact remains that it is an 'office' party and the office rules still apply.
It is an opportunity to chat with people whom you normally do not get to spend time with. In fact, these are the people you should be spending time with, not friends from your own department whom you see every day. Getting to know more people and letting yourself be better known throughout the office is always a good thing. It is also a time to get to know your boss better. This is when you can talk about sport, food, clothes or anything else of common interest. Get to know your boss as a person and let him see the outside office part of you.
How the party atmosphere develops depends on the nature of the company. Very formal ones will become only slightly less so and informal ones can get wild. Whatever happens, follow the lead of others and do not try and take the lead in creating the party atmosphere. That is for the management to do. Try it yourself and not only will you be stepping on your superiors' toes, you could go too far and make a fool of yourself.
As for your personal behavior, follow the same principle. Open up and be as casual as you see your co-workers becoming. Office parties can be very volatile place after the alcohol starts flowing and without meaning to, you could do something to upset someone and have an awkward scene on your hands. If you ever feel you have upset someone, apologize and move away as quickly as you can without being rude.
All this may sound as if the office party is an unpleasant exercise. That's not true. It can be an opportunity to meet new people, get better acquainted with those you already know, get to know your bosses better and build up your equity within the organization. But in the end it is still an 'office' party and it must be treated as an extension of work where the same office etiquette applies. If your boss asks you to call him Sam, you can do so. But that does not mean that you can say politically incorrect things to him or tell him lewd or racist jokes. You can laugh and kid around with a co-worker but that doesn't mean you can put your arm around her in an inappropriate manner.
Behave properly at an office party and do your best to fit in and you could boost your image in the organization. Make a mess of it and your reputation could take a beating. | |
