Celebrating Over 10 Years of Excellence
From Janelle's Desk

Economists say that 2011 will be a year of economic recovery and that the job market will start to expand. That does not mean that everything will become rosy overnight and that everyone will find jobs. It will be a long and slow process and the rush to fill
new vacancies will be enormous. With millions of qualified and experienced people all waiting for a job to open up for them, those who succeed will be those who have an edge.

A lot of highly qualified people have been sitting at home for a long time, waiting to get back into the workforce. The long period of being out of a job goes against them- employers often feel that they may have become rusty. On the other hand, a person who has remained occupied, even if it is in temporary staffing positions is someone who has kept his skill sharp. And that counts for a lot, often to the extent of being more valuable than higher qualifications.

Many people hesitate to take up temporary assignments which are at a lower level than the work they were doing previously. They feel that it reflects poorly on their abilities. However, most potential employers will look at a person's track record and when a loss of employment was not the person's fault, the fact that he or she kept working at whatever level possible shows a great work ethic. Additionally temporary staffing at, any level, gives people wide exposure to different work environments, systems and cultures and that is always a valuable asset.

If you are between jobs and want to keep occupied while putting some cash into the bank, why not become part of Locate Staffing? Locate Staffing will open up a world of temporary staffing opportunities. Many people find they prefer temporary staffing because of the flexibility and variety it offers them and do not return to full time jobs even when they become available. And with the many benefits and training options we offer, you may be one of them.

More Next month.

Fitting In To A New Workplace

Learning the ropes of a new job is not easy, not matter how qualified and experienced you may be. Every company has its own way of working and you need to adapt to them. Equally important is adapting to your new work environment. Every newcomer is an unknown quantity to co-workers and superiors and poses both potential positives and negatives. And while you need to get your act together quickly to start performing, you also need to act to fit in. Here are a few tips to help you settle down quickly.

• Find out about the dress culture of the business and dress appropriately. Dressing casually in a conservative workplace will make you look unprofessional and being too dressed up in a casual environment will make people think you are trying to show off. First impressions are important and difficult to change.

• Don't be afraid to ask your new boss about any unofficial dos and don'ts.

• Do not try and make friends with everyone at once. You are there to work and your first focus should be on your workstation and the assignment you have been given.

• Find out who does what in the office. You are going to need help, especially in the early days, and asking people for guidance is a great way to break the ice. But going to the wrong people all the time or constantly asking whom you should go to for different issues can become irritating. Find out who does what so you know whom to go to.

• Before you approach any one, check to see if they are free to talk to you.

• After getting help for the first time, thank those who have helped you and say that you hope it won't be a pain if you contact them again when you are in need. Ask if there is a time of day when it is most convenient for them to talk to you.

• When walking around the office make it a point to acknowledge and smile at people whose eye you may catch. Do not stop to talk to people unless you are invited to – they may be busy and if you are seen chatting with people too often it may look as if you have no work to do.

• Coffee breaks are a good time to introduce yourself to co-workers. Say a few words about where you are from, but no more. Only if the other person is ready to talk should you carry on. Some people are reserved by nature and if they do not open up immediately, don't take it personally.

• Lunch times can be awkward. Sitting by yourself can make you look as if you are a loner. But joining a group uninvited can seem pushy. A general thumb rule is in a formal environment, wait to be invited and in a casual one go ahead and ask if you can join.

• Don't try to pretend to be something you are not. Newcomers are always being watched and if you are caught out, repairing the damage can often be impossible.

• Every workplace has its own jargon and buzzwords. Don't try to start using them immediately – you will look like a wannabe.

• There are all kinds of people in every office so be open to new friendships but don't let those who are not interested put you off.

And finally, never forget who you are. You need to fit in, but you are also an individual who has a lot to contribute. Learn what is accepted and what is not and within those boundaries, be yourself. Having to act like someone you are not makes settling in more difficult and how long will you be able to keep it up?
