Managing a Cross Cultural Work Force

With globalization, happening at a breathtaking pace, many countries now employ culturally diverse groups of people and in the global marketplace it pays to recognize the differing values of international candidates so that the ideal ones are not bypassed. Staff at Locate Staffing have been trained to deal with people with diverse backgrounds, cultures and are practiced in managing employees effectively.

There is plenty of content available to guide the new immigrant, who adopts and soon learns how to adapt to his / her new country, but there are little or no guidelines available for those who already live in the country or for a manager employed in an equal opportunity company.

So how can employers get through the 'cultural noise' to judge the real quality or otherwise of candidates and also collaborate successfully in-house in international teams? Here are a few tips that you could use to help you manage across cultures.

Guidelines for successfully managing across cultures

• The challenge is that our cultural values are instilled firmly by the age of seven and all we do and say, and how we evaluate others, is imbued with them, usually without our realizing it.

• The best way to acquire knowledge on the various cultural backgrounds that a manager has to deal with would be to read books and articles rich in information on the various cultures.

• Talk to the candidate / employee, get to know them, ask questions that are not intruding and show them that you are genuinely interested in getting to know about their cultural background. The human touch always and definitely plays a great role in fording across bridges.

• Be aware of your own cultural make-up and understand that what seems normal may not be at all normal for the candidate or your overseas colleagues.

• Understand the culture of others - ideally through self-assessment of culturally-determined behavioral styles and values and beliefs relative to other cultures.

• Appreciate the over-riding importance of sensitivity to national communication patterns (including listening habits) using it as an aid to real understanding and that the impact of what is said, or not said, can be totally different from the intent.

Use your in-house diversity effectively.

Understand
1. The value of recruiting a culturally-diverse workforce
2. The competitive advantage of cultural flexibility
3. The importance of continuing cultural education in order to retain people

Put in place ongoing training and cultural awareness programs to increase mutual understanding.
