| | From Janelle's Desk | | The August employment statistics have been a huge disappointment. It is not that few new jobs were created – there were none at all. Over the last year we have received mixed signals from the economy – sometimes the news has been hopeful and at others it has been depressing. The lack of job growth is not | good, but it's no reason to expect the worst. Debating the pros and cons of billion dollar job creation initiatives is something that politicians do with gusto. The rest of us can only wait to see what the outcome of the government's efforts to get the economy back on track will be. And while we wait, we need to meet the challenges that the market conditions continue to throw at us.
One of the biggest problems that 3 years of a faltering economy has created is that of the increasing insecurity of the workforce. The high unemployment rate does not, as many presume, act as an incentive for those employed to work harder to retain their jobs. Instead, the fact that most of the unemployed lost their jobs for no fault of their own becomes a depressing and stress inducing influence. This kind of malaise can rapidly spread, almost unnoticed, throughout a business and leave it not just weak and vulnerable but also unable to face competition when the market begins to grow again.A core group of dedicated workers with a feeling of security in regard to their employment is the foundation upon which a business will build its long term growth.
But nurturing and protecting this core group in times when workforces fluctuate in size regularly requires planning. The best way to ensure that the core remains strong is to ensure that the members remain untouched by market vagaries and that temporary workers are brought in as and when needed to meet operational imperatives. This staff, if provided by a professional temporary staffing agency, will be able to fill in the manpower void effectively for as long as needed, and can then be dispensed with. Since they are temporary staff, there will be no employee depression when they leave. The core group, as it continues to remain untouched, will begin to feel secure and become more productive and committed to the business and its future. Whether it is for a week, a month, a year or more, the arrival and departure of temporary staff will not affect them and their morale. And the business will be able to maintain its productivity in a cost effective and efficient manner.
Locate Staffing is the leading temporary staffing agency in the Sheboygan area and we count the leading businesses of the region among our clients. Our philosophy is that we do not offer only short term staffing solutions, we provide a service that our clients can depend on to offer them long term solutions to all their staffing problems. Temporary staffing is not only about filling in next week's manpower gaps. It is about creating an effective and streamlined long term staffing system which benefits both the management and the full time employees.

This type of manager is everyone's friend. He's always talking about his family and their problems and asks about others' families. In the office he does, to some extent, what he's told to. But that's about it. The criticality of his performance is not something he comprehends. Things are to be done by the 'office.' Actions are undertaken by 'we.' There is no 'I.'
At no time does this person stop and examine his roles and his output. It's not as simple as passing the buck. I wish it were. This manager just does not comprehend that he is accountable. The company will continue to grow, but what is his contribution? In the family there is always someone to pick of the slack of those who do not contribute enough.
This manager cannot understand that while friendships and emotions are part of every organization, they are not the driving factors, as they are in a family. He treats the office like his family, a place to tell people his troubles be friendly and participate in the 'process', with no understanding of his specific role and what is expected of him. If you talk to him about underperforming, he'll tell you about his family problems. Ask him why something has not been done and he'll say 'we' are working on it. Who's the 'we'? He was given a specific task but he drags others into it. He makes it a 'family' project.
He can't understand how badly he's screwing up. After all, if it's okay in the family, why not in the office? Any organization with this type of managers must realize that being nice to the 'nice guy' will only encourage others to act in the same way. It is essential that an attitudinal change takes place, either willingly or under threat of adverse action.
