| | From Janelle's Desk | | It looks like 2012 will be another year of economic uncertainty. The disagreement between the Executive and the Legislature on what needs to be done to stimulate the economy is slowing down our recovery. And the worrying European financial crisis will continue to affect what happens here in the US. | All this will make it hard for managers to plan for growth in the New Year. But plans have to be made and contingencies catered for. The critical thing is to be flexible in the planning process and be ready to make modifications where circumstances demand. At the same time, it is critical to husband resources. Not just because after years of slow economy money is tight but because these resources must be available if an unexpected need should arise. A dip in the market may cause income to drop and funds will be needed to survive until income picks up again. Or a sudden surge may require investment to meet increasing demand.
Payroll expenses are among the biggest overheads a business must deal with. But laying off and then hiring people as the market contracts and expands is not a practical proposition. Laying off people comes with various legal and ethical constraints. And finding the right people at short notice when the market demands is not easy. When they are found, the time required to training them to make the desired contribution to the organization may be such that business opportunities are lost.
This is where temporary staffing is playing an increasingly important role in today's economy. Temporary staff can be used, and paid for, as and when required. The question of laying them off when they are not needed, along with the legal and ethical hassles, does not arise. And a good temporary staffing agency will be able to provide people at short notice that are qualified and experienced and so do not require long lead times before they can play their role effectively.
Locate Staffing is the biggest temporary staffing company in the Sheboygan region. We count the leading corporates as well as smaller businesses among our clients and are proud of the long term relationships we have built with them. These relationships are based on the knowledge that our clients have that we will provide them the right people, at the right place, in the right time and at the right cost. They know that with Locate Staffing working with them, having the right people in place, for however long they may be required, is never a problem.
This allows the management to reduce the influence of staffing issues on their planning for the future and also to control payroll costs more effectively so that available resources are used in the most efficient manner. At the same time, the flexibility of having the right people available as and when needed is not compromised.
This is what we offer our clients. If you would like to talk about your staffing needs and the benefits that temporary staffing can offer your organization, we will be happy to meet with you and examine the various ways in which temporary staffing, done the Locate Staffing way, can support your organization in its growth plans.
Until next month... | | | The Problem With Talent Management | There's a new buzz word going around in HR circles these days – Talent Management. Sounds impressive, doesn't it? It conjures up a picture of an HR department spending its time on nurturing all the talent available in an organization to create 'state of the art' people. This is Utopia! Unfortunately, that's not what it means or how it works.
The basic function of HR is to develop all the people in an organization to their maximum potential so that the company can best utilize its most valuable resource – its people. This is fine in theory, but in practice, next to impossible. Every person is different, with different abilities, aptitudes and motivations. A HR department focusing in detail on each person's needs will be the largest –by far – cost center in the company. So, many companies focus on those who, at first instance, appear the most promising – the most talented. They are given everything in the way of support and training to take them to the top. It sounds okay, but how do you define talent? What happens if a person, after all the resources expended on training him, is found to have reached a level of incompetence? Where is the back up to be found? And what of those efficient performers who do not make the cut? Could anything be more de-motivating for them? Is Talent Management creating organizations with a few brilliant leaders at the top and a large number of de-motivated staff at the base? Can such an organization survive, let alone prosper?
Are we looking at Talent Mismanagement?
