| | From Janelle's Desk | | Another tough year for business is behind us and it's time to focus on the future. The economy is still to recover from the recession, but the signs for 2011 are positive. While the pundits are optimistic, the problem is that there are no historical precedents to base the optimism on. The recovery from last great | economic recession in the 1930s would have been a long drawn out process if it had not been to the National Recovery Act (NRA) and the beginning of World War II. The NRA cannot be applied today and no one wants another war to boost the economy.
But there is hope and businesses need to get ready for expanding markets and increased demand. The key to being able to get a large slice of the market is going to be quick response. When opportunities open, there will be a rush to meet the demand. Those businesses which are able to act without delay are the ones who will get the customers. But getting ready for tomorrow means investing today, something that many businesses do have the resources to do after 2 recessionary years.
One of the key requirements for rapid market response is having manpower in place. Finding the right people and training them to be productive takes time – something which is always in short supply. But employing people on the expectation of increased business is just not possible. And economic recovery will never be a smooth upward curve – there will be many ups and downs in the process, times when a business either may not have enough people or have too many.
Temporary staffing provides a simple and economically viable solution. Having an association with a professional temporary staffing agency will ensure that a business has access to the people it needs, when it needs them. And this will be without any expensive investments which may take time to produce a return.
At Locate Staffing, we are proud to be the largest staffing agency in Sheboygan and the 15th largest employer is Wisconsin. These numbers are not important in themselves but because they demonstrate the size of our talent pool – a talent pool from which we will be able to supply you with the right people, with the right qualifications and experience to meet your manpower needs. The people you need will be available to you with the minimum lead time and training requirements to enable them to start producing.
And once the market stabilizes and you feel the need to take on full time employees, what better place to find them than from the temporary staff that have worked for your business and whom you know and have evaluated? It's a no risk way of getting the people you want for the long haul. Why not make temporary staffing an integral part of your business plan for 2011? We'll be glad to discuss your requirements with you and develop a plan to meet your long and short term staffing needs.
Until next month...

| | | | | The Last KRA | Every HR guy worth his salt knows the importance of KRAs (Key Result Areas) and spends a lot of time and effort working with department heads to define and refine them. KRAs are an extremely useful tool performance management tool. But an over focus on them can, at times, limit the employee's potential contribution to the company.
Let's take the case of John:
John has 7 KRAs. All the KRAs are focused on measuring his abilities, his productivity and his creativity in relation to the job he does. The tighter the focus of the KRs, the more accurate will be the assessment. His last evaluation was average and he wants to do better the next time. Every action of his is aimed at producing results in his KRAs. That's a good thing, right? That's what the system is supposed to do, isn't it? Yes. But the system is not an end in itself.
One day while driving to work John has a brainwave – an idea that could save the company substantial amount in power costs every year. But that's outside his KRAs and he puts the idea aside to focus on trying to get the best possible scores on his 7 KRAs and it is soon forgotten. But suppose there have been an open KRA, for new ideas and thinking out of the box? Suppose John had developed his idea and presented it to the management? It is a kind of bonus – if an employee has nothing in the way of a new idea that does not directly impact the work he does, that's fine and nothing is lost as the evaluation will be done on the basis of the defined KRAs. But if the management likes John's idea, the 8th and last KRA would kick in, either elevating his performance rating or making up for an area where he had not done so well. Not only has John benefited but so has the company which is formalizing a culture of encouraging new ideas and out of the box thinking. | | | | |
