From Janelle's Desk
A big question on every manager's lips today is how strong the economic recovery will be and how long will it take to get back to where we were before the recession and then begin to grow? Ask a dozen economists and financial experts and you will get a dozen different answers. The problem lies partially in the fact that
events overseas will impact what happens here. An example of this is the Greek debt crisis. On one hand the European banks have put together a recovery package for the country, but on the other the credit rating agency Standard & Poor says the plan will lead to the country defaulting on its loan repayments. If that happens, the Euro zone will face an economic crisis and American business interest in Europe will suffer. And this will have a cascading effect on our economy. This is so far beyond our control that all we can do is wait and hope for the best.

The best strategy is to prepare for growth but with as little investment risk as possible. Luckily in the field of manpower, a simple solution is available. Temporary staffing allows for businesses to have the manpower they need when they need it and with the least possible investment. Locate Staffing clients know that the temporary staff provided to them are reliable, qualified and able to learn the ropes of their assignments with the minimum lead time. The temporary staff can be retained for as long or short a period as required so paying for excess staff is never an issue. This is one area businesses don't need to worry about. Which means managers can focus more on areas that can be affected by issues beyond their control and be prepared for whatever may happen.

Until next month...

Burning Out Or Burning Up?

When companies talk of developing of growing people, it is usually focused on their growth in relation to their professional activities. People are sent for programs to refine / refresh their existing skills or to equip them with new ones for the bigger roles they will play in their organizations. Progressive companies spend a great deal of time and effort charting out the career of their best people.

So in the end you have highly focused and skilled people whom you can rely on to take the company into the future. But what about their future? By focusing only on their professional life, aren't these companies creating uni-dimensional people? This is not something as simple as the old "all work and no play...." adage. This is not about people spending 12 or more hours a day at work. The problem is that by encouraging the employees into a kind of tunnel vision where their focus in almost totally work oriented the companies are creating imbalanced individuals who have no compensation mechanism in the form of friends, family, recreation, hobbies etc. for the stresses of their work. Burnout is not caused by job stress – it is caused by the lack of balance in peoples' lives. Companies that understand this are those with the lowest attrition rates.
